Dorman and Sumter traded big plays all night, but the Cavaliers made the winning plays late. Dorman defeated the Gamecocks 48–35 in a game that stayed tight until the fourth quarter.

From the opening whistle, the matchup had the feel of a barn burner. The two teams combined for 12 touchdowns, more than 500 rushing yards, and a steady stream of explosive plays. For three quarters, neither side could create lasting separation.

That changed late. A muffed kickoff return proved to be a turning point for Sumter, giving Dorman momentum at the moment the Gamecocks needed a clean finish. The Cavaliers also took advantage of late-game mistakes to turn a close contest into a 13-point victory.

Means reaches another milestone

Nick Means delivered the night’s defining performance. The Dorman running back rushed for 285 yards and three touchdowns, pushing his career total past 3,000 rushing yards. His production kept the Cavaliers’ offense moving even when penalties threatened to stall drives.

Cooper Patterson added two touchdowns, and Tylan Edwards scored on a fumble recovery. Dai’shion Watkins-hymes and Anthony Peaks each caught a touchdown pass for Dorman.

Sumter’s two-back answer

Sumter answered with a double-headed rushing attack. Reggie Shannon rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns, while Franklin Richardson added 89 rushing yards and a score. Cleveland Pinkney also found the end zone for the Gamecocks.

Sumter finished with 290 rushing yards, but the Gamecocks managed negative-11 yards passing. Their defense had opportunities to swing the game as well, but it could not consistently turn several off-target Dorman throws into points on the other side of the ball.

The cleanup list

Dorman’s win came with a clear warning. The Cavaliers were penalized 19 times for 207 yards, the kind of self-inflicted damage that can decide a playoff game. If Dorman plans to make a run at a state title, cleaning up those mistakes will be just as important as the offense’s explosive production.

For Sumter, the formula was close: win the turnover margin, finish the return game, and capitalize when an opponent gives the defense an opening. The Gamecocks did not do enough of those things late, and Dorman made them pay.
